Roundup of regional developments

Dear Members,

Q1 headliners: Mexico’s first Power auction, the launch of Tesla Model 3, and Saudi Arabia’ vision to set up 2 trillion dollar fund through gradual privatization of Aramco - what do they have in common?

MEXICO first auction produced the lowest subsidy-free solar project contract in the world – averaging the price at $40/MWh while Enel being the lowest bidder at $35.5/MWh. Though the sustainability of these low rates could be in question, this can also be achieved by using tight best-in-class equipment costs and corporate debt to finance the projects. On Tesla, within hours of the launch of Tesla Model 3, the $35,000 car had reached orders for 276,000 - as much as four times the expectations. That’s a $10 Billion of order – enough to make GW battery factories to scale up rapidly! Lastly, Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman laid out his vision for the Public Investment Fund - which will eventually control more than $2 trillion and help wean the kingdom off oil. As part of that strategy, the prince said Saudi will sell shares in Aramco’s parent company and transform the oil giant into an industrial conglomerate (Source- BNEF). A continuous drive towards lower cost, a scale up opportunity for energy storage industry, and a bold move by an oil Rich country to structure its economy – a great non-alcoholic cocktail to continue our progress towards renewable energy both globally and regionally!

MESIA continues to roll out content driven programs to lead the industry. As per membership feedback, we are launching programs with more membership engagement and addressing relevant topics going deep dive! We had very successful membership engagement in Shams Dubai last month where members consolidated and finalized the feed-back report for the policy makers. A great example of member lead event that we will certainly continue. In the next two months we will continue to support the industry in finance, applications and regulatory framework with three to four content driven programs. Please join us!

Lastly, we plan to held our AGM on April 28 (TBC by CDA) – I would sincerely encourage all the members to actively participate to the election and the AGM. MESIA has come a long way over last year to establish itself a credible leader in our space in MENA and we need your continued engagement to help us lead!
